About the book

Atlas of Dreams follows several thousand years of attempts to understand what happens when we close our eyes and the mind gets on with its night shift. Ancient texts, folklore, psychology and modern sleep research all appear here, but they are not asked to pretend they are the same kind of evidence.

This is not a dream dictionary

If you dream about a tooth, there is no ready-made verdict waiting on the next page. The book is interested in where interpretations came from, why some survived for centuries and what the sources actually allow us to say.

The central question

Why have very different cultures repeatedly treated dreams as something worth interpreting, and what remains of those traditions once history, folklore and modern science are put on the same table?
